Tian Hou Mazu ( Heavenly Empress Matsu ) , goddess of the sea in the late Chinese mythology. Her cult originated in the 10-11 centuries . Tian Hou is depicted as seated on the waves, in the clouds or on the throne. She has two assistants : one arm attached to his ear , the other is brought close to the eyes.

According to legend, the prototype Matsu was a girl from a fishing village by the name of Lin , who lived in the year 960 , which was able to swim in the sea on a mat and cross to the island in the clouds . She flew to save brothers in distress at sea. When at age 28 she ascended to heaven , she became totally dependent on all water movement . If Matsu orders , then subside floods and typhoons . But if she pleases , the element can rage again . In 1156 by order of the Emperor , was erected a temple in her honor. Sovereigns awarded its lush titles. Since the 13th century it became known as Tian -fei ( Celestial Concubine ), and from the late 17th century - Tian Hou.

Today Matsu associates living in the country and overseas Chinese. At a rough estimate , the goddess is worshiped more than 200 million people in different parts of the world . Sailors consider it their patroness . Birthday Goddess Matsu falls on the 23rd day of the third lunar month . Most people prefer to make the pilgrimage a few days before that date.
